3 Takeaways from IBMA’s Wide Open Bluegrass

Our own Zack Wright heading to the IBMA Business Conference at the Raleigh Convention Center.

1. Email marketing isn’t losing steam anytime soon.

IBMA’s “Digital Get Down” session featured experts in various facets of the music industry, including artist management (Ramseur Records), record labels (Yep Roc Records), promotion and booking (ReverbNation), band websites (Bandzoogle), and live event marketing (that’s us!).

Rockhouse Partners has been preaching the ROI value of email for years, and it was refreshing to hear the strong emphasis other experts placed on email marketing, specifically owning your database, growing your database, and using it strategically to accomplish your goals.

2. Sponsorship is an ever-increasing conversation.

Mary Doub of Grey Fox Bluegrass Festival said it best when she proclaimed, “Tickets won’t do it. Vendors help. But you NEED sponsors. We do everything we can to keep ours happy.”

There is a growing need for live event properties to add new sponsors, make sure current sponsors are happy, and communicate a story of success at the conclusion of a sponsorship term or event. This is an area we’ve become very passionate about, and we’ve been excited to help our clients tell their story to potential and current sponsors.

3. Bluegrass Music is Dope

It’s hard to imagine Raleigh being full of more talent; every IBMA attendee carrying an instrument could likely give John Mayer a run for his money. What’s more, the Bluegrass community makes events like IBMA that much more enjoyable!

Some of our favorite music from the event?

  • The Railsplitters is big up-and-comer and was the talk of IBMA attendees.
  • Moore Brothers Band is one to watch out for, made up of three brothers ranging from 20 to 11 years of age.
  • Do we even have to elaborate on the jam session featuring Sam Bush, Bela Fleck, Jerry Douglas, Bryan Sutton, Edgar Meyer, and Stuart Duncan? It was, in a word, epic!
