Doug Ulman, President and CEO of the LIVESTRONG Foundation, keynoted the Event and Arena Marketing Conference in Austin, June 12-15. It’s been a rough year for Ulman, but you couldn’t tell from his boundless enthusiasm for the foundation and the patients they serve.

Our take-aways, after hearing him speak: always communicate proactively in the face of a crisis and never, ever, ever give up.

Five Things We Learned at #EAMC2013

1. Email sells tickets. Manage your email marketing as carefully as you do your paid advertising.

2. Contests work. When done right, they’re surefire ways to build your email database and increase social media engagement.

3. Pictures + Captions = Web Content Goodness. Pictures draw more eyeballs than words, and posting high-quality photos to promote your event consistently leads to higher engagement/conversion rates.

4. Know your audience. Tailor posts and content to appeal to your audience’s needs and interests. The more specific and segmented you get, the better your response rate.

5. Say ‘Thank You.’ A simple email showing your appreciation to all attendees the day after the event is always a good call. Make it even better by including a short 3-question follow-up customer survey email to see how you are doing…and where you can improve.
